Of course, this fact will still cause stomach-quaking mirth among those who have never got the joke, but for those of us who did, Necromantic Fantasies is something of a late-career classic in the making. But, through it all, the diminutive throat has stood by his vision, and in 2021 it is quite clear that Cradle of Filth will do as they please. The detractors have been many, the co-conspirators at times seemingly even greater in number.
As they hammered through the feral, florid genius of Black Goddess Rises that steamy night, it would have been a fertile imagination indeed that would see the band come up with something like Necromantic Fantasies from this new album, Existence is Futile.įor here, with the band on cruise-control and purveying what sounds like a sample-heavy mashup of the themes from the original Star Trek series and The Love Boat overlain by the guitars from Iron Maiden‘s Hallowed Be Thy Name and the raving barking of a lunatic, it is finally apparent that the final victory has been Dani Filth‘s, and his only.
This would have been around the time of the band’s debut full-length The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, and I don’t think the band, let alone me, thought that their journey would still be ploughing forward at full steam ahead over a quarter of a century later. Even on a Thursday night, fans showed up to pack the venue and you could see it on their faces that they were left satisfied until the next time COF comes around. When I first saw Brit black metal institution Cradle of Filth, their then-keyboard player, Benjamin Ryan, was tinkling the ivories wearing a Papier-mâché Goats’ head in a pub in North London. COF wrapped up their show, bowed to the fans and once again left the stage. To end the show, COF played their usual closing song which was From the Cradle to Enslave. Sadly, it was time for COF to call it a night. It's a truly beautiful song that let Iratni shine with her hauntingly beautiful vocals. Nearing the end of the show, COF played one of their best songs Nymphetamine (Fix). The other song played from the new album was Necromantic Fantasies. The first song was the first single from the new album Crawling King Chaos which also has a music video out. Being that they just released a new album, it would only make sense that they played a couple of songs from the new album. The song hasn't been played live since 1995 so for most, if not all the fans in attendance, it was their first time hearing this cover live. After a brief break, COF came back out and played their Iron Maiden cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name which is one of the bonus tracks on the album. A powerful finish and COF left the stage to prepare for the encore set. The album came to a finish with Lustmord and Wargasm. It's always a pleasure hearing this song live as it has only been started playing live since 2017. After a few more songs, up next was the 11-minute gothic masterpiece Bathory Aria. There were no quiet or dull moments as COF performed their songs to perfection and fans loved every minute of it. The next songs from the album were Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids and the fan favorite, Beneath the Howling Stars. Vocalist and founding member Dani Filth unleashed his hellish shrieks and high-pitched vocals onto the audience in front of him. The band started with full force as fans raised their horns and mosh pits quickly started up. Being that they're playing Cruelty and the Beast in full, they started their show with Thirteen Autumns and a Widow. The lights went out and the crowd cheered as the members of COF made their way to the stage. As COF prepared to go on stage, the stage was covered by a thick eerie fog that only gave the stage more life.
